Lawsuit reform organization asks Governor Spitzer, legislative leaders to take action on tort reform
New Yorkers for Civil Justice Reform - a broad-based coalition representing professional and business organizations across the state - has appealed to New York's governmental leaders for action to rein in out-of-control lawsuits in medical malpractice, business liability and other areas.
The coalition sent separate letters on Dec. 10, 2007, to Governor Spitzer and to the legislative leaders, asking them to make tort reform a priority for 2008. "The prolonged stalemate over reining in New York’s 'tort tax' has contributed to the enormously high property tax burden for homeowners and businesses in New York, has reduced access to health care in many portions of New York State, and has driven up costs for home builders and other contractors, municipalities and consumers," the letter said. "It has hindered efforts to revitalize the upstate New York economy."
